Archery—RRES 200

This course provides men and women with instruction in target style archery. Emphasis is on the archery form currently used in Olympic sports. Students will use only the recurve bow, the compound bow will not be used in this class. Participants will learn safety rules, scoring, stance, release of arrow, and execution of follow through. Information on basic equipment selection and set-up will also be taught and all equipment will be provided by the instructor. All equipment will be provided by the instructor. Techniques will be tailored to fit individual levels of advancement.

Intermediate Archery—RRES 200

Watch a short video about Archery

This class is designed for students who have archery experience and have completed the RRES 200 Beginning Archery course or are competent archers. In this class, students will advance to the next level which includes learning how to instruct a beginning archery class.  This curriculum will include goal setting and a detailed study of the forms and methods of current Olympic style archery.   Testing and practicum for grading will include coursework outside of the classroom.

Option for certification through USA Archery is available with additional expense for instructor materials and the requirement to join one of three organizations for proper certification. The level one certification is appropriate for instructors who will be working at camps or with recreational programs. Demonstration of proficiency is a prerequisite and will be evaluated at the first class. Total expenses for instructor materials and membership in one of three organizations for certification is approximately $70.

This course will cover the basic fundamentals of bowling: How to choose a ball, stance, four-step approach, aim, spot bowling, proper release and spare conversion system. Score keeping, tournament play, rules and tips will also be taught.

Intermediate Bowling—RRES 200

This intermediate bowling course will include lessons on the three factors of rolling the ball: ball weights and how they affect the path down the lane; how different ball surfaces affect ball reaction; and differences in ball cover stocks, counter weights, and balance holes. Students will learn how to play different lane conditions and how it affects your ability to score, and how to make lane adjustments. Advanced bowling terminology, the history of the game of bowling, and governing bodies will be discussed in class. There will be videotaping of the student bowler for review and to document progress.

Boxing 1—RRES 200

Watch a short video about boxing.

Get into shape by participating in the sport of USA Olympic Style Boxing. Students will be taken through a boxer’s workout in a safe and comfortable environment while learning boxing punches, a proper boxing stance, footwork, movement, shadow boxing, and self-defense. Students will be introduced to the many rhythmic bags, heavy bags, and focus mitts. Learning the sport of boxing is a fun way to relieve stress, gain self-confidence, get stronger, leaner, and faster, while developing a sense of self through boxing ethics.  There will be no sparring in this course.

On the first day of class, students will place their order for the correct boxing equipment needed for this course: Safety gloves (16 oz. leather gloves needed for safety), curved focus mitts, and 180” stretchable hand-wraps; the total purchase is $100. Boxing 4—RRES 200

Boxing 4 will emphasize boxing skills needed for competition.  Students will learn how to move in the ring, get off the ropes and out of the corner, work the corner as a coach, USA Boxing rules including how to judge a boxing match, how to be an inside boxer, pressure boxer, defensive boxer and how develop a style to suit their body type. In compliance with Amateur or Olympic-style boxing programs, Boxing 4 also provides these opportunities for participants:  respect for the ring, respect for the sport and it’s rules, character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, structure and work ethic.  No sparring course.

Rock Climbing I—RRES 200

Learn the sport of rock climbing from the “ground up.” No prior experience is needed, as this course is designed for novice to intermediate climbers who would like to learn the foundational skills and information needed to enhance knowledge about rock climbing as well as enhance rock climbing skills and abilities.  Students will learn about climbing gear and terminology, how to belay, and how to tie basic climbing knots.  Students will leave this course with a belay certification at the KSU Rockwall.  A large focus of the course will teach progressive climbing movement skills, from beginner to more advanced movements. Most of this course is activity based, so students will be expected to physically push themselves in order to advance their skills and ability to climb harder grades.

Rock Climbing II—RRES 200

Take your climbing abilities to the next level! This course is designed for intermediate to advanced climbers who would like to expand their skills, knowledge, and abilities. Students will learn how to lead climb indoors with instruction on clipping fundamentals, lead belaying and climbing, and they will learn how to catch a fall. The class will then progress to learning how to apply indoor climbing skills in an outdoor setting, with students learning the skills necessary to sport climb outdoors. Topics covered include outdoor climbing ethics, safety, and equipment. Anchoring and rappelling will also be covered. This course is activity based, so students will be expected to physically push themselves to advance their skills and knowledge.
Prerequisite: Completion of Rock Climbing 1; or Belay Certified at the Kansas State Rock Wall with the ability to climb 5.9 or above.

Beginning Fencing—RRES 200

Beginning fencing is an introduction to the fundamentals of modern sport fencing. Of the three weapon types (foil, epeé, sabre) sanctioned in international competitions, only foil is taught in beginning fencing. Fencing entails progressive conditioning of the shoulders, lower torso and legs along with fine motor enhancement of the fingers and wrists. Understanding fencing has wide application off the strip- integrating diplomacy, aggression, speed and skill. This course may not be repeated for credit.

Scuba Diving—RRES 200

This course will prepare students for NAUI Scuba Diver Certification. Areas of information covered include introductory information for certification, knowledge of the equipment, physics of diving, medical problems related to diving, use of diving tables, diving environment, and general information. The date for certification will be determined at a later date. A certification fee of $75 will be assessed at the time of check out dives. However neither UFM nor KSU is responsible for the certification. Travel and lodging are at the student’s expense. Students must provide their own mask, fins, and snorkel, which will be available for purchase at the first class. Equipment ranges in price from $100 to $175. There is a nonrefundable materials fee of $50 for withdrawing from the class after the first day.

Woodturning

Woodturning is the act of using a wood lathe and specialized cutting tools to shape wood into useful, artful, or whimsical projects.  This class will focus on the useful and artful.  We will cover safety, sharpening, and use of the tools, selection of wood, mounting the wood on the lathe, shaping it with these tools, sanding, and finishing.  Students will complete three projects to acquire hands-on experience of woodturning techniques and how to safely use the tools.  Projects include turning a small bowl, turning a candlestick, and spindle duplication.  These skills are useful for the hobbyist, the wood artist, and the professional woodworker who may work in the field of furniture making or architectural woodturning.

ZUMBA Dance

ZUMBA is a dance class that improves health and mental well-being. This course is designed for all dance and fitness levels. Each session includes a dance routine that incorporates the basic Latin-music steps (e.g. Cumbia, Salsa, Merengue, Reggaeton) with other types of dance-moves (e.g. Hip Hop, Belly Dance, Bollywood, K-pop, and Soca). In addition, students can gain expertise and appreciation of diverse music, language, and culture from around the globe!
